Tucked away in the hills of Townshend, VT, Lawrence’s has been serving locals and travelers alike for generations. What started as a small smoke shop has grown into a beloved country store stocked with everything from cob-smoked bacon and local cheese to handmade gifts and old-school candy that brings you right back to the New England summers you remember as a kid.
These days, you’ll find more than just smokehouse staples on our shelves. The store is filled with pickles from Vermont makers, seasonal pantry items, maple syrup, jams, and thoughtfully chosen gifts-many made by artisans right here in the Green Mountains. We’re proud to support local farms and small businesses, and it shows in every corner of the store.

Our History
Lawrence’s got its start back in the 1950s, when Merrill Lawrence began smoking hams and bacon right here on-site. Word spread quickly because his meats were rich with flavor and smoked the old-fashioned way, and before long the shop became a local favorite.
As demand grew, the smoking operation moved to nearby Newfane, Vermont, but the family kept Merrill’s tradition alive, continuing to sell his signature smoked meats in the store. Even after the Newfane smokehouse eventually closed its doors, we found a trusted partner across the border in New Hampshire to help us keep those same time-honored flavors on our shelves.
Today, several decades and a couple of owners later, we’re proud to carry on the Lawrence’s legacy. While we may be the “new owners,” we’re certainly not new to the neighborhood—we’ve been running River Bend Farm Market right next door for over 20 years. It’s a joy to welcome familiar faces and first-time visitors alike into our store, and to keep serving up the same local treats and small-town charm that put Lawrence’s on the map.

We also do gift baskets! You can choose from our standard options or we can fill one with special requests to create the perfect present for any occasion. Give us a call and we can have it ready for you to pick up, or we can ship it to anywhere where it needs to go for you.
Please note, we package our perishable product in insulated wrap with ice sufficient to ensure product quality upon delivery under normal shipping conditions. At this time we will no longer be guaranteeing product if it is delayed due to unexpected issues with standard shipping.
